Juniors: Analyzing Rhetoric in the Presidential Debate

This week, students will spend the majority of class time working on their Presidential Debate Rhetorical Analysis Essay. On Friday of last week, students had time to choose and watch a fifteen minute segment of the debate and take notes. I encouraged students to work on their prewriting over the weekend so that they could dive right into drafting on Monday.

As students work throughout the week, they will engage in a number of mini-lessons that will help them complete the essay assignment. Students will learn about authentic paragraphing, composing strong topic sentences, and writing a comprehensive and clear thesis statement.

The presidential Debate Rhetorical Analysis Essay is due at the beginning of class Thursday, October 13. The essay must be submitted to turnitin.com and shared with me on Google Docs in order for the paper to be considered complete and on time.

Parents, how can you help?

  • Check in with your child prior to Thursday’s due date. Have they written a two page paper? Have they checked the scoring guide to ensure they’ve met the requirements of the paper?
  • This is the last week of the quarter, and I will finalize grades this weekend. Any grade concerns should be addressed by your child no later than Thursday at 3pm.
