Freshmen: Digging into Lord of the Flies

After being introduced to William Golding’s Lord of the Flies through reading and discussion of Chapter 1 last week, the freshmen in Room G17 will begin their two week reading of this novel. The due dates for this week’s reading are as follows:

  • Chapters 2-3 due Wednesday (9/21)
  • Chapters 4-5 due Friday (9/23)
  • Chapters 6-7 due Monday (9/26)

As students read the assigned chapters, they should also annotate for their assigned character and symbols. PLEASE NOTE: Students will not be reading for readers workshop or completing an article of the week for the two weeks that we will be reading the novel.

In class, students will be given reading time each day. In addition, we’ll be working on the study of symbolism in the novel as a whole class and in small groups. We’ll also study outside texts, including an article explaining Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and an excerpt from the John Locke’s challenging text, Second Treatise on Civil Government.

Parents, how can you help?

  • Check in with your child about their reading of Lord of the Flies. All the work we do for the rest of this quarter will be related to this text. From quizzes to formal writing assignments, students engagement with this text will largely determine their success this quarter.
