As students continue reading Chapters 8-17 of Catcher in the Rye, we will analyze their previous reading through class discussion, research on context, and analysis of tone. Students will research topics such as the 1950s era, JD Salinger’s life, and the impact of Catcher in the Rye, considering how this contextual information supports or challenges their initial understandings of the novel. They will also look closely at Holden’s tone, distinguishing what is said from what is meant by Holden.
In class, students will be given time to work on their reading of the novel, their reading of their choice book, and answering the comprehension questions assigned.
