After introducing students to the language of Shakespeare during week 2 of the quarter, students will begin their study of Shakespeare’s famous Romeo and Juliet. We will read Act I Scenes 1-3 aloud over the course of the week, engaging in a series of activities that help students work on their comprehension of this difficult text. Our focus in our study of these scenes is to become familiar with the characters and analyze how their word choice, often full of flowery and figurative language, impacts their tone and ultimately their characterization.
Parents, how can you help?
- Our analysis of language will require students to dust off their literary terminology from middle school. Click here for a review activity. This activity is also helpful for paraphrasing Shakespeare’s language.
